Start with the job, not the badge

Write down the vessel, operating area, purpose and whether the work is paid. A state recreational licence, a sailing-school certificate and an AMSA certificate solve different problems; one does not automatically replace another.

For private recreation, check the marine authority for the state or territory where you will operate. For paid work on a domestic commercial vessel, start with AMSA. For a charter holiday, ask the operator what experience evidence and local briefing it requires.

A practical decision sequence

First separate private recreation from paid work. Next identify vessel type, engine power and local licence triggers. Then compare training that builds the missing practical skills. Finally, confirm recognition with the organisation that will rely on it.

Treat course names as clues, not guarantees. Similar-sounding awards may have different prerequisites, assessment methods and areas of recognition.

Evidence worth keeping

Maintain a contemporaneous log of trips, roles, conditions, distances and the skipper who can verify the entry. Keep certificates, radio qualifications and first-aid records together, including expiry dates where relevant.

A clean record makes it easier to explain your experience to a trainer, charter operator, insurer or regulator—and makes gaps in your own practice visible.
