Read the bay as a working waterway
Review Safe Transport Victoria guidance, local zones, notices and port information. Commercial shipping, ferries, recreational traffic and strong changes require a disciplined lookout and clear actions.
Long fetch over the bay can produce uncomfortable short seas. A sheltered departure point does not describe conditions on the other side.
Treat the Heads with respect
The entrance has strong tidal streams, traffic controls and complex sea conditions. Obtain current local information and training; generic timing advice is not enough to make a safe transit.
A decision to continue outside should depend on a full coastal plan, appropriate equipment and crew capability—not simply reaching the entrance.
Plan for rapid weather changes
Check current Victorian marine forecasts, warnings and observations. Set wind, sea-state and visibility limits appropriate to the boat and crew.
Build an alternative that avoids forcing a return through a difficult entrance or an exposed lee shore. Reassess before the last comfortable turning point.
